Business Agility and Organizational Agility

With a growing trend in agility, business agility and organisational agility are the terms used by many. We hear terms like "agile," "business agility," and "organisational agility," considering all of them the same or different. But the actual connection between organisational agility and business agility gets confused by many. Many working in this field know only about business agility and have no idea about organisational agility. So in today’s article, we will learn in detail about both organisational and business agility and what they mean and what the difference between them is.

Organizational Agility

In the 20th century, organisations were created with reliability and efficiency in mind. Agility and speed were not concerns, but now everything moves faster in the digital age, and achieving customer delight at the lightning speed of market change is a new goal for organizations. To achieve this with value requires expanded and digital production lines, modernised offers, fact-based decisions, streamlined solution developments, and a mass market. Making the business world a software business in which organisations in all fields are connected and exploring with software in some way. Organizations can achieve all that is required to compete in today’s world with organisational agility.

Organizational agility is a competency where lean-thinking people and teams optimise business processes, evolve strategies, and decide on new commitments to adapt quickly to change in the organisation to capitalise on new opportunities.

The competency of organisational agility is expressed in three dimensions, which are:-

Lean-Thinking People and Agile Teams- This dimension is to deliver the business solutions, including software development, digital systems, and supporting activities that are security, privacy, availability, and support that help in continuously addressing the business problems. By following some of the below tips, teams and people can easily embrace lean and agile practices, principles, and mindsets.

By implementing the agile mindset and principles in businesses.

When agile is used in teams, team members achieve unprecedented levels of performance and personal satisfaction at work, which aids in the spread of agile throughout organizations.

Making the organization's environment agile, as many pieces of research have shown the positive and negative effects of the working environment on the processes and organizations' growth, along with teams ways of working and mindset.

Lean Business Operations: This helps an organisation understand the relationship and importance of the operational value stream and development value stream that deliver a solution to customers and the ones who develop these solutions, respectively. Understanding and implementing it involves mapping a value stream, implementing flow, and optimising the operational value stream with the help of tooling and automation.

Strategy Agility: This third dimension assists organisations in understanding market changes and upgrading strategies to implement them decisively in order to capture market opportunities quickly. It involves market sensing, innovating a lean start-up, implementing change, innovation accounting, ignoring sunk costs, and organising around values.

Business Agility

We can say business agility is a bigger term where a complete enterprise is considered and not only teams and people are looked at for agility.

Business agility helps an organisation change from a traditional hierarchy to a scaled organisation with a fast-growing network. Once organisational agility organisations change the hierarchy from a traditional system to an agile one, they want to expand it and grow at a higher level. While pursuing it, organisations must ensure that each individual understands their roles in carrying out the critical details. To obtain business agility, organisations require achieving reasonable mastery in all the seven competencies that are mentioned below.

Lean Agile Leadership involves applying and advancing lean-agile leadership skills to drive and sustain organisational change to reach its highest potential.

Team and Technical Agility- Driving teams’ agile behaviour and technical practices.

Agile Product Delivery: Building high-performing teams to achieve a continuous flow of valuable products, release on demand, and continuous delivery pipeline.

Enterprise Solution Delivery: Establishing the most significant software applications, cyber-physical solutions, and networks.

Business agility and organisational agility both help an organisation to transfer from a traditional system to an agile system and scale it at a higher level so that it can grow and flourish in its vision. The difference between both is clear with the above explanation, making it easy to know when to use the requirement.
