SAFe Program Consultant in Agile Methodology

Along with agile implementation, SAFe is also becoming more popular and is adopted by various organizations small, medium, and large. SAFe is becoming a leader of frameworks in an organization as it helps them in scaling agile practices and principles. As SAFe training is required for the entire team, even its very basic configuration requires a large investment of cost and time. With available cost and time implementing SAFe in an organization is a challenging task. Agile also includes collaboration, delivery, and alignment among different teams including that SAFe provides flexibility and evolving frameworks that meet incremental milestones. This critical role of implementing SAFe all over the teams and organization is carried out by the persons who can handle pressure and a lot of responsibilities at once. The individuals handling this immense pressure and responsibilities are called SAFe Program Consultants (SPC).

They are the agents who combine various roles and their technical knowledge with an essential motivation for improving an organization's software and development process systems. SPCs can be anyone who’s already working in agile in different roles such as business or technology leaders, product managers, program managers, analysts, consultants, process leads, or architects.

There are many faces an SPC has to be responsible for some of them are

·       Mentor

·       Coach

·       Guide

·       Trainer

·       Facilitator

Even though these roles may seem similar to anyone but they all have very different and divert responsibilities than the other. Every role mentioned above is important in the implementation of SAFe.

In performing the role sufficiently and satisfactorily basic coalition is required which is as

·       Leaders who can show way, set vision, and remove obstacles

·       A practitioner, change agent, or manager who can implement specific process change

·       Taking seriously the organizational credibility

·       Experts are required to take intelligent and quicker decisions

When we observe in deeper the SPC have lots of responsibilities as they play various roles in the implementation of SAFe in an organization some of the most important responsibilities they carry are;

·       They help in communicating the vision for change, business needs, and urgencies

·       They help managers, leaders, and stakeholders with the socialization of new concepts, overview training, and orientation. They lead the organization in creating digital age leaders and facilitation modules.

·       They play an important role in establishing metrics, rollout plans, and communicating further changes

·       SPC helps in building and executing the transformation backlog for assisting lean-agile center of excellence

·       SPCs identify the development and operational value streams and Arts which are most opportunistic for launching that helps stakeholders to understand the flow of value.

·       They help in the preparation, access, and evolution of ART launch and backlog readiness. They train the role of agile teams, product owners, scrum masters, release train engineers, and product managers.

·       SPCs help trains the agile teams, at initial but critical levels like inspection and adaptation, program increment planning, and establishing dates for ART launch, events, and calendars for ARTs.

·       To maintain roadmaps, vision, and product backlog SPC’s also train leaders and executives. They guide shifting from project to product including customer centricity, design thinking, scrum of scrums, system demos, and follow-up of improving items.

·       They help teams in developing a DevOps culture and mindset, establishing agile practices, infrastructure, and a continuous delivery pipeline.

·       Further, they also guide the implementation of agile practices at a portfolio level and communicate strategic theme value.

·       For supporting the new organizational value stream, expand LACE reach, and start ARTs SPC involve more new agile change agent.

·       SPCs use their mastery of seven competencies and execution of business agility for organizational growth making the organization aware of where they stand and developing an action plan for achieving agility in all 21 dimensions across SAFe competencies.

But for SAFe organizations, many have doubts about how many SPCs should they have. The answer to this confusion is not guided in the SAFe. But not anyone alone can achieve all the required for implementation. This shows us that many of the SPCs are required across emerging lean-agile businesses. In almost approximately 3-5 per 100 practitioners driving and sustaining the implementation is required.

With help of SPC’s certification lean agile individuals are trained to acquire these skills and tools for executing their responsibilities. Teach and coach others to implement and support the agile change.
