Effective Vision Statement Key Points for the Company

If you want to reach a goal, you must “see the reaching” in your mind before you arrive at your goal.” – Zig Ziglar

Researchers have confirmed that when we visualize our goals and process to reach them we are more likely to achieve them. Constant visualizing of the goals and processes will provide you with direction and a goal to aim at. Bearing in mind the prominence of this, agile has a culture of setting vision statements for every important start. Agile for teams has a team vision statement, a product vision statement for products, and even a vision statement for the organization.

In agile the vision statement for the organization defines the company's desire they expect to achieve in a long run, how a company will look in the future, and set a strategic direction for execution and planning at a corporate level. The team vision statement clears the team’s desire where they want to reach as a team, inspiring every team member to connect and collaborate, and providing a direction to reach their goal. Whereas, a product vision statement defines the reason for that product's creation, its uniqueness, and who it’s made for. For creating every vision statement a good thought is given and key elements are considered. We will understand and discuss every vision statement in detail in our upcoming blogs one by one as every statement has its importance and requirement. Let’s start by discussing the organization's vision statement.

When we come to agile, the question arises of why we even need a vision statement for an organization when we have an agile manifesto. Transforming to the agile, the agile manifesto is indeed enough required direction, but it is a detailed set of principles. While starting agile culture, a communicative intent with just enough specification is necessary that can be understood, appreciated, and embraced throughout the organization levels.

While deciding on a company vision statement, a company must be clear that they are not too ambitious while defining its long-term aim. Here are some effective key elements to keep in mind while working on the agile company vision statement

Forward-Looking

The vision statement for a company must always be future headed considering what the company in the future will look, think, and feel like. Where the company is heading and what its full potential will be.

Motivational and Inspiring

It should state what future connection and direction you want to push forward to, that brings motivation and inspiration to a company to work towards the goal.

Reflective of Companies Culture and Values

It should reflect the core values and culture of the company as culture and values are what define the company throughout the journey. It let the inside and outside world know what a company is and what they value the most, helping them define the whole and sole of an agile company. The vision statement must define the company’s uniqueness.

Targeting to bring Benefits and Value to Company

The vision statement is to motivate and let company employees at all levels understand what their company values the most and what they are aiming for. So the vision statement for an agile company must be stated in such a way that everyone must know what they are laying stones for.

Defining Companies Existence Reason and its Future as well

The vision statement of the company should be defining the company’s current position as well as the future realistic position they want to reach.

Along with mentioning all the above key points in a vision statement of an agile company we should also see if some basic criteria mentioned below are fulfilled.

It should be short- No one will remember or be able to embrace too long a vision statement. Try to keep the vision statement as short as possible. No exceeding more than two to three sentences.

Believable and achievable - It should be believable and should seem achievable considering the company’s current state. Even though it is long term but cannot be deemed unattainable.

Must Be Relevant- The vision statement should be relevant to the company in all aspects, and also must matter to all key stakeholders as they are the root of the company.

The bottom line is that the vision statement must be motivational, inspirational, and direct the company towards a better future stating the company's current state and core values with its uniqueness while defining where it is heading.

Defining a vision statement including so much in it seems a challenging and creative job but it carries such value that brainstorming to achieve it is surely worth it. As it defines a complete company and its employee, bringing them the motivation for what they are trying to achieve.
